ICT Reflection for the month of September 2020.

Considering the present situation, I have to teach and lecture online to my students. In fact all school in our country suspended in-class instruction due to the coronavirus pandemic. In maximum frequency I took online classes for the class four to six grades. Based on my experience I could say that online instruction has real value in some settings. We the teachers has the interaction with the children and has interactive classes. It also provides the learners to explore knowledge beyond the classroom settings.

I could say that online teaching works well and has good discussion, especially if everyone is motivated and prepared. If there are 10-12 students or fewer, it’s fairly easy to keep track of everyone and has good interaction as in person. By contrast, things are tougher with the large number of learners. In large number of learners it is hard to gauge how more than a small fraction of learner is reacting to you, and also hard to manage the discussion. Effective instruction often depends on maintaining the learners and being able to gauge how well the learner are absorbing what the teacher has taught. Sometimes I also did the lecture followed by questions approach, which makes things easier. Even so, lack of eye contact with most of the learners made it hard to gauge things. And managing the questions was harder than it would be in a classroom.

Another thing I could say is, students have bit trouble interacting with each other when they can’t see more than a fraction of classmates at once. That, too, is an impediment to effective discussion. But, later in future when the teachers and students are familiar with this current situation then I think there won’t be any issues in the teaching process. Some of these problems will be diminished as people get more used to the systems. The online teaching may be more effective in future when students and faculty have more time to prepare for it.

However, the students often have great difficulties to propose their own solutions. Even though till now maximum of the students are familiar with the system and few of them are really doing good.  Of course, the problem that many students do not attend my lecture and classes due to the lack of materials. Some of them were not able to afford the materials that is used in the online teaching. So, to support these students for their learning the teachers used to visit their house once a week to deliver door to door teaching.
